Total employment in the broad public sector in the third quarter of 2025 was 74,431 persons. Employment in General Government was 69,346, and in publicly owned enterprises and companies was 5,085.
In General Government, employment was 52,879 in Government, 10,429 in Non-Profit Organisations, and 6,038 in Local Authorities.
The sector’s employment increased by 1,294 persons (1.8%) compared to the same quarter of 2024. Specifically, employment in Central Government increased by 643 persons (1.0%), in Local Authorities by 550 persons (10.0%), and in publicly owned enterprises by 101 persons (2.0%). The increase in Local Authorities is mainly due to a 347-person (40.9%) rise in District Local Government Organisations.
Compared to the second quarter of 2025, employment decreased by 2,883 persons (3.7%). Employment increased in Local Authorities by 156 persons (2.7%) and in publicly owned enterprises by 46 persons (0.9%), while Central Government employment decreased by 3,085 persons (4.6%). The decline in Central Government employment is mainly due to fewer employees with fixed-term contracts in the Educational Service.
