The Statistical Service reports a 15.1% increase in total motor vehicle registrations in January–February 2026, with detailed data on vehicle categories, fuel types, and trends compared to the previous year.
The Statistical Service announced the publication of the report titled “Registration of Motor Vehicles” for the period January–February 2026.
In February 2026, total motor vehicle registrations numbered 4,670, a 24.3% increase compared to 3,757 in February 2025. Passenger saloon cars registered 3,600, up 23.8% from 2,908 in February 2025.
During January–February 2026, total registrations increased by 15.1% to 9,020 from 7,834 in the same period of 2025. Passenger saloon cars rose to 6,917 from 6,084, a 13.7% increase, with 34.7% new and 65.3% used cars. Rental cars decreased from 555 to 502.
The share of petrol-powered passenger cars decreased to 36.2% from 41.6%, diesel-powered to 8.9% from 9.2%, and electric cars from 5.3% to 5.2%. Hybrid cars increased from 43.9% to 49.6%.
Motor coaches and buses registered 44 units, up from 20 in the same period of 2025. Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 26.2% to 1,155, with rental vehicles up 88.0% to 47, heavy goods vehicles up 67.4% to 149, road tractors up 42.9% to 40, and light goods vehicles up 18.9% to 919.
Mopeds under 50cc decreased from 49 to 15. Mechanised cycles over 50cc increased by 14.7% to 758. Other vehicle categories also saw increases, with total registrations reaching 9,020 units in January–February 2026.
Data is collected monthly by the Department of Road Transport and published by the Statistical Service. The report is available free of charge online, with detailed tables and data accessible via the CYSTAT portal and database.
