The European Central Bank (ECB) has published a comprehensive overview of its diversity and inclusion (D&I) efforts, milestones, and research findings. Since 2010, the ECB has made public commitments to promote diversity across facets such as gender, nationality, religion, ethnicity, age, cultural background, sexual orientation, disability, and more.

Key milestones include the adoption of gender strategies, the establishment of D&I networks and ambassador programs, and the integration of D&I into the ECB’s business strategy. Notable progress has been made in increasing the share of women, especially in senior management, reaching a critical mass of 33% in all salary bands since 2010.

The ECB has implemented measures to attract talent, improve recruitment, develop careers, and support flexible working arrangements. Initiatives include targeted outreach, inclusive language, mentoring, leadership training, and campaigns addressing underrepresentation.

Research by ECB staff, such as the 2022 study on the gender promotion gap, shows that since 2011, the promotion gap between women and men has closed, partly due to policy changes and targeted actions. Women still apply less often for promotions, especially against external candidates, but ongoing efforts aim to address this disparity.

The ECB collaborates with other central banks through the Eurosystem’s D&I charter, which has 29 signatories committed to preventing discrimination, promoting equal opportunities, and fostering an inclusive culture across the system. The ECB also participates in international conferences and exchanges on diversity and inclusion topics.

Further information and detailed milestones are available in the official ECB publication linked below.
