The Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) criticizes the Cyprus government for inaction on the nursing staff shortage, calling for urgent decisions to prevent health sector crisis escalation.
The Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) expresses deep concern over the ongoing shortage of nursing staff in Cyprus. It highlights that the government’s continued inaction worsens the health sector crisis, affecting patients, hospitals, and public health.
OEB has repeatedly presented proposals and participated in meetings to address the issue. Despite these efforts, no measures have been adopted, leading to worsening conditions and loss of valuable time.
On December 22, 2025, OEB attended a meeting convened by the new Minister of Health regarding the potential suspension of a private hospital. The Minister committed to studying recommendations and scheduling a follow-up meeting within a month.
Instead of immediate decisions, the Ministry assigned a report to a Greek professor on health workforce planning, including nursing. This response is seen as inadequate given the urgent and serious nature of the shortage.
On February 11, 2026, the OEB Board authorized the President and leadership to take all necessary measures, including hospital shutdowns if needed, depending on future developments.
The health sector requires prompt, effective decisions. Continued delays and reports are unacceptable, and responsibility for the consequences will rest with those who prefer stagnation over action.
