The European Central Bank (ECB) held the Jahreswirtschaftsempfang NRW 2026 in Münster on July 13, 2026, with Isabel Schnabel, Member of the ECB Executive Board, presenting key challenges to Europe’s growth and resilience.

Challenge 1: Geopolitical shifts threaten competitiveness, with indices showing rising trade policy uncertainty and geopolitical risks, influenced by events such as the China-US trade war, Russian invasion of Ukraine, Hamas attack, tariffs, and Iran war, with latest data from July 2026.

Challenge 2: Demographic aging and climate change dampen growth prospects. Potential GDP growth in the euro area is projected to decline, while global GDP losses due to climate change are significant, with projections extending to 2050.

Challenge 3: Fiscal sustainability requires higher potential growth. Defense spending as a share of GDP is increasing, and government interest expenditures are projected to rise, with some countries activating fiscal escape clauses.

Challenge 4: Europe lags in innovation, with fewer patents and lower venture capital investment compared to the US and China. Patent applications and venture capital as a percentage of GDP are key indicators.

Other key points include the importance of integration through reducing trade barriers, the adoption of AI and innovation to boost productivity, and efforts to reduce dependencies on critical raw materials and international card schemes to enhance sovereignty.
