Total employment in the broad public sector reached 78,388 persons in Q1 2026, with increases compared to both the previous quarter and the same quarter of 2025.
Total employment in the broad public sector in the first quarter of 2026 was 78,388 persons. Employment in General Government was 73,236, and in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies was 5,152.
Within General Government, employment included 55,354 State Employees, 11,476 Non-Profit Organisations, and 6,406 Local Authorities.
The sector saw an increase of 1,354 persons (1.8%) compared to the first quarter of 2025. Specifically, employment in Central Government increased by 339 persons (0.5%), in Local Authorities by 825 persons (14.8%), and in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies by 190 persons (3.8%). The notable increase in Local Authorities is mainly due to a rise of 512 persons (55.2%) in District Local Government Organisations.
Compared to the fourth quarter of 2025, employment increased by 264 persons (0.3%). Increases were observed across all categories: Central Government by 49 persons (0.1%), Local Authorities by 181 persons (2.9%), and Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies by 34 persons (0.7%).
