The European Parliament approved a ten-year overdue revision of EU rules on social security coordination, enhancing clarity and cooperation for workers across member states during Cyprus’s EU Presidency.
The European Parliament has approved a revision of the European Union (EU) rules on the coordination of social security systems. This update aims to ensure fair and transparent access to social security for EU workers living or working in another member state.
The revised regulation, overdue by ten years, establishes clearer criteria for determining which social security legislation applies to workers who reside or work in different member states. It also clarifies how periods of employment, self-employment, or insurance completed in various states are to be considered when assessing rights.
Additionally, the regulation encourages member states to exchange information promptly to detect errors, fraud, or abusive practices.
The Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) congratulates the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Marinos Moushiouttas, and his team for successfully completing this revision during Cyprus’s EU Presidency, a process pending for a decade.
