ECB President Christine Lagarde discusses Normandy’s regional strengths, Europe’s role in supporting local industries, and the importance of building a united Europe to face global challenges.
Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, delivered a speech at the Fête de la Pomme in Épreville-en-Lieuvin, France. She highlighted her personal connection to Normandy and emphasized the region’s role in European integration.
Lagarde noted that Normandy’s local industries, such as Calvados production, benefit from European support through a broad market, geographical protections, and structural funds. In 2022, Normandy’s exports, mainly to the US and other EU countries, contributed significantly to regional prosperity.
She discussed current global challenges, including geopolitical conflicts, energy shocks, and technological changes, which impact Europe’s trade and growth. Lagarde stressed the need for stronger internal markets, especially in services and digital sectors, and for better cross-border capital flows.
Lagarde highlighted Normandy’s leadership in low-carbon energy, including nuclear and wind power, and called for improved European energy grid connections to optimize supply and reduce prices.
She emphasized the importance of fostering innovation and investment within Europe, citing examples like the tech company Mistral and the Scaleup Europe Fund. Lagarde underlined the ECB’s role in maintaining price stability and supporting a digital euro to enhance payment security and sovereignty.
Concluding, she praised Normandy’s regional identity and urged continued cooperation to leverage regional strengths for broader European prosperity and resilience.
