Christine Lagarde, ECB President, discusses Europe’s historical choices, current challenges, and three pathways for Europe’s future at the Deutsche Bundesbank dinner in Berlin.
Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, delivered a speech at the official dinner of the Deutsche Bundesbank in Berlin, Germany. She reflected on Berlin’s history and Europe’s past choices that shaped its development.
She highlighted key moments, including West Germany’s 1949 election, which anchored the country in the West, influencing European integration. The fall of the Berlin Wall allowed East Germans to choose freedom and unity with the West. During that period, Europe experienced a time of cooperation, expanding economic relationships globally.
Currently, Europe faces a more challenging global environment, with major powers using economic and geopolitical influence to their advantage. Lagarde presented three pathways for Europe’s future:
She emphasized the importance of collective action, including the Savings and Investments Union and the digital euro, to strengthen Europe’s position. Lagarde concluded with a reference to a medal of Alexander von Humboldt, quoting his words: “Challenging things never seem impossible,” encouraging Europe to embrace the difficult but achievable task of building a united future.
