European statistics competition national phase results announced

The Statistical Service, the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth of the Republic of Cyprus, the University of Cyprus, and the Cyprus Statistical Society announced the completion of the national phase of the European Statistics Competition 2025-2026.

Participation was open to secondary education students in Cyprus, forming teams of 2 to 3 pupils supervised by a teacher. Teams competed in two categories:

• Category A: Upper Secondary (up to 18 years old as of 31/12/2025)
• Category B: Lower Secondary (up to 16 years old as of 31/12/2025)

The competition consisted of two assignments. The first included a basic knowledge test, use of official statistical data sources, and interpretation of statistical reports, with 197 teams and 562 students participating. The top 10 teams from each category qualified for the second assignment, where they prepared a statistical analysis presentation based on a provided dataset.

The final rankings determined the winning teams in each category. Prizes include monetary awards for students, tablets for tutors, and honorary plaques for schools. The top two teams in each category qualify for the European phase of the competition.

• 1st Prize: ANOVA from Laniteio Lyceum
• 2nd Prize: LLASTAT2 from Latsia Lyceum
• Honorary Mentions: OUTLIARS (Med High English Private School), LANSTAT (Laniteio Lyceum), COLD3 (The Grammar School)

Results for Category B (Lower Secondary):

• 1st Prize: STATRUN from Laniteio Gymnasium
• 2nd Prize: PROMETHEUS from Med High English Private School
• Honorary Mentions: DTSTATS1 (Dianellou and Theodotou Gymnasium), PGPXN4 (Pera Chorio–Nisou Regional Gymnasium), GOLD1 (Agios Ioannis Crysostomos Gymnasium)
