The preliminary fiscal results for January 2026 indicate a surplus of €538.8 million (1.5% of GDP), slightly below the €569.3 million surplus recorded in January 2025, according to CYSTAT.
The preliminary fiscal results of the general government sector for January 2026, prepared by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT), indicate a surplus of €538.8 million, which is 1.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This compares to a surplus of €569.3 million (1.6% of GDP) in January 2025.
During January 2026, total revenue increased by €14.7 million (+1.0%) to €1,551.5 million, from €1,536.8 million in January 2025. Revenue from taxes on income and wealth increased by €71.2 million (+12.2%) to €657.0 million. Capital transfers increased by €2.3 million (+79.3%) to €5.2 million.
Taxes on production and imports decreased by €24.0 million (-6.2%) to €363.4 million, with net VAT revenue increasing by €9.2 million (+3.7%) to €258.9 million. Social contributions decreased by €7.8 million (-1.8%) to €423.4 million. Property income decreased by €2.2 million (-31.0%) to €4.9 million. Current transfers decreased by €8.9 million (-42.4%) to €12.1 million. Revenue from the sale of goods and services decreased by €15.9 million (-15.7%) to €85.5 million.
Total expenditure during January 2026 increased by €45.2 million (+4.7%) to €1,012.7 million, compared to €967.5 million in January 2025. Expenditure details include an increase in intermediate consumption by €10.2 million (+13.9%) to €83.5 million, and social benefits increased by €19.3 million (+4.5%) to €450.0 million. Current transfers increased by €21.7 million (+30.2%) to €93.6 million.
The capital account increased by €4.2 million (+12.7%) to €37.4 million. Gross capital formation increased by €0.6 million (+2.3%) to €27.0 million, and other capital expenditure increased by €3.6 million (+52.9%) to €10.4 million. Compensation of employees decreased slightly by €1.4 million (-0.4%) to €313.8 million. Interest payable decreased by €0.2 million (-0.6%) to €34.3 million, and subsidies decreased by €8.6 million to €0.1 million.
Note that estimates for some entities, particularly local government, are provisional due to data submission delays. The net lending/borrowing for January 2026 was €538.8 million, compared to €569.3 million in January 2025.
