The Department of Environment announces the implementation of Article 5(5) of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging waste, effective from August 12, 2026, requiring compliance with PFAS limits in food packaging.
The Department of Environment has announced the implementation of Article 5(5) of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR), concerning the control of PFAS substances in packaging that contacts food.
This obligation applies from 12 August 2026 and establishes specific concentration limits for PFAS substances in food packaging placed on the EU market. Businesses involved in manufacturing, importing, or placing packaging or packaged food on the market are advised to assess their packaging and ensure they have the necessary compliance documentation from their suppliers.
The Department of Environment is preparing an interpretative guide, which is expected to be published in September 2026.
