The 2024 health and hospital statistics report covers inpatient discharges, day-care discharges, outpatient attendances, and causes of death in Cyprus, with data from public and private contracted hospitals and health services.
The 2024 health and hospital statistics report provides data on hospital discharges, outpatient visits, and causes of death in Cyprus.
Inpatient discharges from hospitals contracted with the General Healthcare System (GHS) reached 116,485 in 2024, a 9.1% increase from 2023. Of these, 40.1% were from the State Health Service Organisation (SHSO) hospitals, and 59.9% from private hospitals. The most common specialties for discharges were General Surgery (15.4%), Obstetrics and Gynaecology (13.0%), Pathology (12.8%), Cardiology (10.9%), and Orthopaedics (10.2%).
Discharges based on diagnosis showed the highest percentages for diseases of the digestive system (12.2%), circulatory system (11.7%), respiratory system (10.8%), neoplasms (10.6%), injuries and poisoning (9.7%), genitourinary system (9.6%), and pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium (8.9%).
Day-care discharges totaled 355,619 in 2024, an 11.2% increase from 2023, with 42.2% from SHSO hospitals and 57.8% from private hospitals. The specialties with the highest discharges were Nephrology (43.5%), Pathological Oncology (15.2%), and Haematology (8.6%).
Outpatient attendances reached 8,101,688 in 2024, up 1.9% from 2023. Of these, 10.0% occurred at SHSO hospitals and health centers, while 90.0% were at private physicians’ offices. Attendances to personal doctors were 9.5% at SHSO facilities and 90.5% at private practices; for specialist doctors, 10.4% at SHSO and 89.6% at private providers.
In 2024, there were 6,925 recorded deaths, with 54.5% men and 45.5% women. The leading causes of death were neoplasms (25.2%), circulatory system diseases (22.8%), respiratory diseases (8.6%), endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases (7.6%), mental and behavioral disorders (5.4%), and external causes of injury and poisoning (5.4%).
Data sources include the Health Insurance Organisation’s IT system for hospital discharges and outpatient visits, and the Cause of Death Register for mortality data. The report covers both residents and non-residents dying in Cyprus, as well as deaths abroad of Cypriot residents.
