Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), was interviewed by Jean-Christophe Lalay and Maxime Mainguet on September 12, 2026.

She explained the ECB’s decision to increase key interest rates to address inflation, which is currently at 3.3% in the euro area, above the 2% target. The rise aims to contain inflation amid ongoing shocks from the Middle East conflict and global energy capacity destruction.

Lagarde emphasized that the ECB’s mandate is to maintain price stability across the euro area and that the current external shocks require a cautious monetary response, even if it risks slowing growth.

She highlighted the importance of structural reforms in France, including European initiatives like the capital markets union, administrative simplification, labor market flexibility, and pension reform, to support sustainable growth.

Regarding demographic challenges, she noted that productivity improvements can offset declining workforce size, and Europe must mobilize its talent, savings, and education to remain competitive.

Lagarde addressed rising government borrowing costs, attributing them to public finance conditions and AI-related funding needs, but reassured that Europe’s financial sector is stronger than during past crises.

She dismissed proposals for debt cancellation by the Banque de France as financially dangerous and contrary to European treaties.

On AI-related risks, she warned of potential stock market corrections due to high asset valuations and circularity risks, but noted Europe’s financial resilience.

Regarding her role, Lagarde stated she will serve until October 2027 and has no plans to return to national politics, emphasizing her commitment to her current position and her age of 71.
