The Statistical Service reports an 11.2% rise in total motor vehicle registrations from January to August 2026, compared to the same period in 2025, with notable increases in passenger cars and goods vehicles.
The Statistical Service has published the report titled “Registration of Motor Vehicles” for the period January–August 2026.
In August 2026, total motor vehicle registrations numbered 3,777, an increase of 8.9% compared to 3,468 in August 2025. Passenger saloon cars registered 3,061 units, up 9.2% from 2,803 in August 2025.
For January–August 2026, total registrations increased by 11.2% to 38,564 from 34,668 in the same period of 2025. Passenger cars increased to 29,902 from 26,961, a rise of 10.9%. Of these, 31.2% were new and 68.8% used cars. Rental cars declined by 14.2%, from 4,044 to 3,468 units.
The share of petrol-powered passenger cars decreased to 35.3%, diesel-powered to 8.0%, and electric cars to 4.3%. Hybrid cars increased from 43.6% to 52.4%.
Motor coaches and buses increased to 142 units from 101. Registrations of goods conveyance vehicles rose by 13.4% to 4,463, including light goods vehicles, road tractors, heavy goods vehicles, and rental vehicles, all showing growth.
Mopeds under 50cc decreased to 103 from 155, while mechanised cycles over 50cc increased by 10.8% to 3,428 units.
Data collection is conducted by the Statistical Service based on information from the Department of Road Transport, covering various vehicle categories, energy types, and characteristics. The monthly publication of the report has been ongoing since 1982 and is freely available online.
