The Statistical Service reports a 15.1% rise in total motor vehicle registrations in January–April 2026, with April 2026 registrations up 22.1% compared to April 2025.
The Statistical Service announced the publication of the report titled “Registration of Motor Vehicles” for the period January–April 2026.
In April 2026, total motor vehicle registrations numbered 4,733, representing a 22.1% increase compared to 3,877 in April 2025. Passenger saloon car registrations increased by 24.2% to 3,632, from 2,924 in April 2025.
During January–April 2026, total registrations increased by 15.1% to 18,570, from 16,133 in the same period of 2025. Passenger saloon cars increased to 14,259 from 12,509, a rise of 14.0%. Of these, 33.7% were new and 66.3% used cars. Rental cars decreased by 14.8%.
The share of petrol-powered passenger cars decreased to 35.6%, from 42.9%, and diesel-powered cars to 8.5%, from 9.0%. Electric cars increased to 5.2%, and hybrid cars rose from 43.3% to 50.8%.
Motor coaches and buses increased to 84 from 44. Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 17.8% to 2,263, including light goods vehicles, road tractors, heavy goods vehicles, and rental vehicles. Mopeds under 50cc decreased to 43 from 80. Mechanised cycles over 50cc increased by 21.5% to 1,666.
Data are collected monthly by the Statistical Service from the Department of Road Transport and include various vehicle categories, energy types, and usage details. The report is available free online through the CYSTAT portal and related databases.
