The Statistical Service estimates that in 2024, Cyprus generated a total of 669,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste, representing a 5.6% increase compared to 2023, which recorded 633,000 tonnes.
Of the total waste treated in 2024, 78.5% was disposed of in landfills, 14.2% was recycled, 2.9% was used for energy recovery, and 4.4% was composted.
The average municipal waste generation per inhabitant in the European Union in 2024 was 517 kg. Cyprus’s per capita waste generation reached 664 kg, ranking it the 4th highest among EU member states. The top countries were Denmark (755 kg), Belgium (699 kg), Luxembourg (681 kg), Cyprus (664 kg), Germany (628 kg), and Malta (621 kg).
Data includes waste from households, commerce, trade, small businesses, institutions, bulky waste, yard waste, street sweepings, litter, and market waste, collected through various methods.
