OEB Chairman Mr. George Pantelides issued a statement regarding the crisis in the Middle East and its impact on Cyprus.
He confirmed that Cyprus is not participating in military operations in the Middle East and will not be involved, with the government providing explicit assurances.
The proximity to operational fields and an incident involving a drone at the British Base of Akrotiri prompted immediate state response, with support from allied countries, mainly Greece, creating a strong defensive shield against threats or accidents.
He acknowledged citizens’ concerns but emphasized that business activity continues without significant obstacles, apart from the temporary suspension of some airline flights. Recent announcements by Hermes Airports confirmed that most airlines have maintained their schedules, and some that suspended routes have resumed service to Larnaca and Paphos.
Mr. Pantelides stressed the importance of returning to normal social and economic activity promptly to prevent unnecessary economic damage. He called on the government to consider measures to mitigate potential increases in fuel and raw material prices and to support the hotel and tourism sectors.
