Quarterly national accounts show 3.0% GDP growth in first quarter 2026

The GDP growth rate in real terms for the first quarter of 2026 is estimated at 3.0%, driven mainly by wholesale and retail trade, information and communication, and financial activities.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in real terms, seasonally adjusted, increased by 3.0% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same quarter of 2025.

The positive growth is mainly attributed to sectors: “Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Motor Vehicles,” “Information and Communication,” and “Financial and Insurance Activities.”

Table 1 provides detailed data on GDP in real terms across various economic activities, with the total GDP amounting to €7,798.1 million in Q1 2026.

In terms of expenditure, final consumption expenditure was €5,926.9 million, with household and NPISH consumption at €4,639.2 million. Gross fixed capital formation was €1,488.2 million, and imports and exports of goods and services were €8,180.5 million and €8,683.4 million respectively.

The quarterly national accounts are compiled using an indirect approach based on short-term indicators, with data transmitted to Eurostat two months after the reference quarter. The estimates follow the European System of Accounts (ESA 2010) standards.
