The Statistical Service reports a 12.9% increase in total motor vehicle registrations in January–March 2026, with notable rises in passenger cars, goods vehicles, and motor coaches compared to the same period in 2025.
The Statistical Service announced the publication of the report titled “Registration of Motor Vehicles” for the period January–March 2026.
In March 2026, total motor vehicle registrations numbered 4,817, an increase of 8.9% compared to 4,422 in March 2025. Passenger saloon car registrations rose by 5.9% to 3,710 from 3,504 in March 2025.
During January–March 2026, total registrations increased by 12.9% to 13,837 from 12,256 in the same period of 2025. Passenger cars increased to 10,627 from 9,585, a rise of 10.9%. Of these, 34.0% were new cars and 66.0% used cars. Rental cars decreased from 1,027 to 822.
The share of petrol-powered passenger cars decreased to 36.0% from 43.2%, diesel-powered cars to 8.8% from 9.0%, while electric cars remained at 4.9%. Hybrid cars increased from 42.9% to 50.3%.
Motor coaches and buses increased to 64 from 38. In January–March 2026, goods conveyance vehicles increased by 19.5% to 1,731, with heavy goods vehicles rising by 55.3% to 233, rental vehicles by 43.1% to 73, road tractors by 34.1% to 59, and light goods vehicles by 13.5% to 1,366.
Mopeds under 50cc registered decreased to 29 from 60. Mechanised cycles over 50cc increased by 22.4% to 1,191 from 973.
Data collection is conducted by the Statistical Service from the Department of Road Transport, covering various vehicle categories, energy types, and other characteristics. The report is published monthly since 1982 and is available free online.
