The Statistical Service reports a 13% rise in total motor vehicle registrations in January-May 2026, with notable increases in passenger cars, goods vehicles, and motor coaches compared to the same period in 2025.
The Statistical Service announced the publication of the report titled “Registration of Motor Vehicles” for the period January-May 2026.
In May 2026, total motor vehicle registrations numbered 5,173, a 6.0% increase compared to 4,879 in May 2025. Passenger saloon cars registered 4,000 units in May 2026, up 7.7% from 3,715 in May 2025.
During January-May 2026, total registrations increased by 13.0% to 23,743 from 21,012 in the same period of 2025.
Passenger saloon cars increased to 18,259 from 16,224, a 12.5% rise. Of these, 33.5% were new and 66.5% used cars. Rental cars decreased by 14.2% from 2,197 to 1,884 units.
The share of petrol-powered passenger cars decreased to 35.4%, from 43.7%, while diesel-powered cars declined to 8.3% from 8.8%. Electric cars increased to 5.0% from 4.7%, and hybrid cars rose from 42.9% to 51.3%.
Motor coaches and buses registered 102 units, up from 63 in the same period of 2025. Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 15.4% to 2,854 units, with light goods vehicles rising by 11.5%, road tractors by 16.8%, heavy goods vehicles by 32.1%, and rental vehicles by 51.7%.
Mopeds under 50cc decreased to 55 units from 101 in the previous year. Mechanised cycles over 50cc increased by 15.3% to 2,149 units.
Data is collected monthly by the Statistical Service from the Department of Road Transport and covers various vehicle categories, including make, energy type, and usage.
