State employees increased slightly in April 2026

In April 2026, the total number of state employees reached 55,571, a 0.2% increase compared to the same period in 2025, with variations across categories and services.

In April 2026, the total number of state employees was 55,571, representing an increase of 81 employees (0.1%) compared to April 2025.

Employment in the Civil Service declined by 1.0%, while employment in the Educational Service increased by 1.7%. Employment remained stable in the Security Forces.

The largest increase in total employees was observed in employees with contracts of indefinite duration (1.8%), and the largest decrease was in employees with contracts of definite duration (-2.3%).

Within services, the largest percentage increase was in employees with indefinite contracts in the Educational Service (24.8%), while the largest decrease was in employees with definite contracts in the Security Forces (-86.9%), mainly due to contract non-renewals in July 2025.

For January–April 2026, the average total number of employees increased by 0.2% compared to the same period in 2025.

Data includes employees from the Civil Service, Educational Service, and Security Forces, excluding members of the House of Representatives. Data is provided by the Treasury of the Republic of Cyprus and refers to paid employees in the current month.

Note that as of January 2024, classification changes resulted in a break in the series, affecting comparability with previous data. The term “Government” was replaced by “State Employees” in March 2026.
